St. Joseph's Parish

St. Joseph Parish is located in Wessington Springs, SD and in recent years has combined with St. Placidus of Duncan.

There is an active Knights of Columbus, Altar Society and CCD program, along with Theology on Tap monthly in the area.

a message from Fr. Larry:

Dear parishioners of the Christ the Light of Nations Pastorate,

At a town hall meeting held on August 20, 2026, at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket for the parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Wessington Springs, Bishop Donald E. DeGrood informed those in attendance that he had not approved the rebuilding of the St. Joseph church that was destroyed by fire on December 26, 2026. Bishop DeGrood shared that he reviewed all the information submitted to him by the parish and the pastor, and he made the decision only after extensive consultations with his leadership team, the Diocesan Finance Council, and the Diocesan College of Consultors.

This is a difficult time for our pastorate, most especially the parishioners of St. Joseph Parish. It must be emphasized that the Parish of St. Joseph will continue to exist, and that even though no church will be rebuilt in Wessington Springs, the parish will continue to operate, albeit in a different manner. More information will follow on how we move forward with the same faith, hope, and charity that has been present and will continue to exist in the faithful Catholics of Jerauld County. May St. Joseph, pray for us.

Interested in requesting a Mass Intention?

What is a Mass Intention?
A Mass intention is a specific purpose for which a priest offers a Mass, such as for the soul of a deceased person, for someone's health, or to celebrate a special occasion. This practice is a way to bring the needs and prayers of the faithful before God during the Eucharistic celebration.

Do Mass Intentions cost money?
While there is not a required fee for a Mass intention, it is suggested to donate $10 per Mass intention to support the church and its priests, helping cover the costs of materials needed for the Mass.

How do I request a Mass Intention?
Contact the Parish Office at (605)796-4387 or place your intention in the collection basket at Mass.

Can I request a special date?
Yes, you can request a special date, but not every date is available. There may not be Mass that day or that day may have already been selected. Contact the parish office to learn what dates are available. It's best to get your special date requests in early.
